ATS Resume Tips for Freshers

No work history yet — here's what actually carries weight with an ATS.

Without years of job titles to lean on, freshers often either leave a resume too thin or overcompensate with clutter. Both hurt ATS parsing. Here's a structure that works.

Lead with education, then projects

Put "Education" near the top, including your degree, institution, graduation year, and CGPA/percentage if it's strong. Follow it immediately with a "Projects" section — for a fresher, projects are your closest equivalent to work experience, and ATS systems generally parse them the same way as job entries if you format them consistently (project name, tools used, one or two outcome-focused bullets).

Use a real skills section, not a paragraph

List specific, matchable skills — languages, frameworks, tools — rather than burying them in a summary paragraph. "Proficient in Python, Java, SQL, and Git" parses far more reliably than a sentence describing your general capabilities.

Quantify what you can

Even without a job title, you can quantify: "Built a resume-parsing tool that processes PDF and DOCX files locally in-browser" is stronger than "Made a resume tool." Numbers, technologies, and outcomes give both the ATS and the recruiter something concrete to match against.

Include relevant coursework and certifications

If you lack internship experience, relevant coursework ("Data Structures, DBMS, Operating Systems") and certifications (cloud, specific frameworks, competitive programming platforms) give the ATS more matchable terms tied to the role you're applying for.

Keep it to one page

Most freshers don't have enough verified experience to justify a second page, and a shorter, denser resume tends to parse more cleanly than one padded to fill space.
