Software Engineer Resume Checklist

Run through this before you hit submit on any engineering application.

Use this as a final pass, not a first draft — it catches the mistakes that quietly sink an otherwise strong resume.

Format & parsing

• Single-column layout — no tables, text boxes, or multi-column sections
• Saved as a text-based PDF or DOCX (text is selectable, not an image)
• Name, phone, email, and location in the body text, not a header/footer
• Standard section headings: Experience, Education, Skills, Projects
• Consistent date format throughout

Content

• Skills section lists specific languages, frameworks, and tools
• Each bullet leads with an action verb and includes a measurable outcome
• Technical terms match the job description's exact wording where true
• Acronyms spelled out at least once ("Continuous Integration (CI)")
• No unexplained internal jargon or team-specific tool names

Structure & length

• One page for under ~8 years of experience, two pages max otherwise
• Most recent role or project listed first
• Education placed appropriately (top for freshers, lower for experienced hires)
• No large gaps in employment left unexplained if avoidable
